3 Primary Focal Points For Your Living Room

How to Choose the Living Room Focal Point

Choosing the living room focal point can be challenging, especially when you have several options. You may not know exactly where to begin. You have a sofa, two chairs, an entertainment center or a television in the room as well as tables. When designing your living room, no matter what you want to make as your focal point  there is a way to do it without changing too much of the room.

3 Primary Living Room Focal Points

The Fireplace

About everyone who has a fireplace in their livingroom wants the decor to center around it. A fireplace can be used anytime of the year. Throughout the cold weather, it can be used for warmth. In the warm weather, you can place rows of candles in the fireplace instead. A fire or flame flickering is peaceful and calming. It can relax you when nothing else can.

You can make the fireplace the focal point of the room by starting with your mantel. Begin by placing wallpaper on the wall that the fireplace is on. This will automatically attract attention to this side of the room. Your wallpaper doesn’t need to be outstanding. Choose an earth tone or neutral color that will help create balance in the room. You want to keep the mantel decor simple. Add a picture and a small stature or figurine if you choose. Many people make the mistake of over decorating their mantels and this can be a distraction. Balance it with simple decor.

Next, you want to turn the furniture to face the fireplace. You can turn the chairs close together and facing the fireplace. The side tables can hold accent pieces as well as drinks. Don’t add lamps to the tables that are close to the fire. Use small boxes that are decorative for holding books and magazines. You can also use baskets.

You want one large area rug or several smaller area rugs to place in this area. If you use the large area rug, it must be large enough to place the furniture on. If you use smaller rugs then you can place one rug in the middle of the sitting area so that all the feet would be placed on the rug when everyone is sitting on the sofa. Use brown area rugs or yellow area rugs because it is easier to blend the rest of the decor with these colors.

Window Views

If you want your main focal point to be out your main window then you need to do a few things to your living room to get you there. Not only can a main window allow light into the room but it can also give you beautiful views.

Create a window seat for reading or just sitting down. The window seats can be built to hold extra linens and pillows underneath. You will need to add a neutral tone in curtains and upholstery in order to create a calming and enjoyable view. You can use a sheer drape or a soft swag that hangs over the window but looks delicate. Be sure to hang the swag outside of the window so you can enjoy all the views without the curtains getting in the way. You also need an area rug in front of the focal point. The rug is there to define that particular area. After you are finished with your window, you can have the furniture face the window.

A Comfortable Focal Point

If you just want a place in the home that feels and looks comfortable then you want a comfort focal point. This type of focal point is easy to obtain with just a little effort. You will need to decorate the sofa since this is the largest sign of comfort in the room. You may want to consider slipcovers that you can buy or make. Choose tones that are pleasing to your eyes. It may be neutral tones or even pastel tones. You may want to use a bold slipcover and accent the sofa with pastel colors if you like that look better.

Accessories need to provide color as long as they are colors that you like. You want these accessories to attract attention to the sofa, which is also the focal point since you want a room of comfort. Add a simple coffee table in front of the sofa.

Place an area rug in front of the sofa or under the table to accent that area. Choose a color like yellow rugs or white rugs to go in front of the sofa and complete your area.
