Ensure you drill into the hardest part of the wall to increase your mirror’s staying power: drilling into the mortar between bricks, or into the plaster board between timber studs, will not give a satisfactory hold for your screw fixing.

Depending on the power source for the lighting in an illuminated mirror, you may need to wire the mirror up. Alternatively, it may be powered by an internal battery and not require any electrical work during installation. Bear in mind that all home electrical work should always be carried out by a qualified electrician, so please make sure you hire a professional for installation if you do buy a mains powered illuminated mirror.

Your plumbing is hidden below the basin, and your storage space is tucked away there too. A wide vanity unit will offer you an enormous amount of storage space, in the form of drawers, cupboards, open shelving, or a combination of these, but even a small vanity unit offers an impressive amount of capacity for storing essentials.

Open shelving, beneath a washstand, for example, or on a wall between your units or above your basin, is helpful for daily use items. Glass shelving is transparent and can help a room look larger, but try not to cram it too full or you’ll lose this space enhancing effect.

Finally, to save space inside your bathroom furniture for other items you could think about installing a towel rack. Like an old fashioned luggage rack on a train, these come in traditional or modern styling and can be fitted anywhere you like, including above the bathroom door for truly out of the way storage capacity. A high enough concentration of ozone isn’t created in the steam shower to kill bacteria. Also Ozone in large concentrations is very harmful to our respiratory systems. For these reasons we do not recommend purchasing units with this system.

TV/MP4 Player

TV and entertainment systems can be found in some models of shower enclosures. The problem with these is the televisions typically are not ETL certified so they cannot be installed in new construction applications 9 time out of 10. Although this is a great feature for some, most people decide there is no reason for a TV in the shower.

Refrigerators

This is another luxury option only found in a few steam shower kits. It’s big enough for a six pack. ( Warning: Do not consume alcohol before or during a steam bath)

Back Massage Jets

Back massage jets are one of the best features of both custom and modular showers. It it’s a custom shower these are going to be very pricey and you want to make sure you are getting the right type of system that will give you the best pressure available. For modular steam units the rule typically is less is more when it comes to body massage jets. All modular steam rooms run of a ½” hot and cold water line so there is only so much water to go around. With few jets you get better pressure and more performance.

Aroma Therapy

Another great feature found in almost every steam shower is aromatherapy. For customer steam showers this is typically added directly into the steam generator. Your first step in choosing a color scheme for your bathroom will be to determine whether the room will show color through paint or accent decor. Once your vanity unit has been assembled, it’s time to install it. First of all, check you have all the required parts. Remove any drawers and open or remove cupboard doors which would otherwise get in the way as you fit and plumb in the unit.

We’re assuming here that your old vanity unit, if you had one, has been removed, that your water supply and waste pipes are laid, and that any new flooring has been fitted. Prior to removing the old unit, you will have turned off the water supply to the hot and cold pipes feeding the vanity unit, or alternatively turned off the mains supply to the house.

Begin by assessing the area. If the water pipes and waste protrude from the floor beneath where your vanity unit will sit, you’ll need to cut holes to accommodate them in the base of the unit; if these same pipes come from the wall, you’ll need to cut the relevant holes in the back of the unit.

If your vanity unit is designed to accommodate an inset or under counter basin, it will very likely already have holes cut to size in the surface for this purpose. If you have bought a countertop basin and vanity unit, the top of the unit may have been left whole, so that you can decide exactly where you would prefer the basin and taps to sit. When cutting the holes you’ll need, take heed of the old maxim ‘measure twice, cut once’: if you accidentally put a hole in the wrong place, or you cut a hole that’s too large, it’s unlikely that the supplier will take pity on you and offer a refund! Sand down the rough edges of your new holes and wipe down the whole unit to finish this stage.

Once your vanity unit is prepared, you can attach it to the wall. Again, measure carefully and only drill when you’re sure. A floor standing item will support its own weight as you climb inside to fix it to the wall, but if you have a wall mounted unit, you may need a helper or two to support the weight while you worry about the fixings.

Next, plumbing. If your taps are of the basin mounted variety, they will need to be attached securely to the basin before you position and fix down the basin itself. A deck mounted tap, however, can be fitted once the basin is in place. Securely fix flexible water pipes running from the bottom of the tap, through the vanity unit, to the water supply. You need a secure, watertight seal at both ends, so make sure that the fixings are screwed on both straight and firmly. The basin waste is fitted in a similar way to the waste outlet pipe. Make sure you follow any specific fitting instructions that are provided with your components, and if you’re really not confident, don’t hesitate to hire a plumber – any mistakes now could be costly in terms of water damage to your bathroom.

By this stage, your new bathroom furniture should be fixed to the wall, and the water supply and waste plumbed in. Use silicone sealant to seal the slight gap between the edge of the vanity unit and the wall. Then, check very carefully that there are no leaks as you open up the water supply to the unit.

When you’re happy with the job, you can fit the doors or slot the drawers back into your completed bathroom furniture, which is now ready to use.

Since then, the Japanese toilet industry has come a long way. Although the squat toilets can still be found in some homes and in all public places, some seventy two percent of the Japanese homes are equipped with a modern toilet and bidet. Japan’s modern toilet a.k.a the washlet, is the most advanced in the world and has been so noted in the Guinness World Records. The model referred to was built in 1997 and is now considered almost obsolete with the onset of a modern toilet and bidet combination. When you first see the toilet, it looks very much like a Western style toilet but it has many features. Some of the features are: a dryer, heated seat, various options for massage, adjustments for the water jet, the lid opens automatically, it flushes automatically, and it has a wireless panel to control room heating as well as air conditioning. The control panel is either mounted on a wall close to the toilet or attached to the seat.

The combination toilet/bidet has a nozzle, which is the most basic part of the toilet. It is about the size of a pencil and it protrudes from under the toilet seat. This nozzle sends water for cleaning. It can be set to clean the anal area or the genital area. Because of the Japanese concern for hygiene, this nozzle does not touch any part of the person’s body. This nozzle also cleans itself both before it is used and after it is used.

To use the nozzle, one has to find the correct button on the control panel and the nozzle adjusts itself. The same nozzle is used for all operations, but it adjusts itself to different positions and uses different openings to send the water to the right area. In order to avoid being sprayed, the toilet seat is equipped with a sensor that only allows the use of the nozzle when the toilet is being used. The feature that allows for heating the seat is common and is found on toilets that do not have the bidet. The Japanese homes do not have central heating therefore, the bathroom temperature, in cold climates is generally only a few degrees more above freezing where the water is.

These toilets are high tech and will allow you to adjust the pressure of the water and the temperature of the water. The nozzle position can also be adjusted manually and gives you the option of having a pulsating or vibrating water jet. The newest and more advanced toilet will allow you to mix your water with soap. This combination toilet/bidet eliminates toilet paper. A dryer is used to dry the washed area.

If you’re thinking of a bathroom makeover, consider the shape, size, and style of your bathroom at the outset. Bathroom furniture should always complement the room: a narrow room will benefit from slimline units that lend a harmonious look to your space without projecting too far from your walls. This way, you maximise the floor space available. You might like to try fitting one or two mirrored cabinets, as well, as they will reflect the room and make it appear larger. In a larger room, you have more options: standard depths increase your overall storage capacity, which is good for keeping spare towels, toilet rolls, and all your hygiene and beauty products tucked in your vanity unit out of the way from day to day.

And what about that storage capacity? Vanity unit solutions for a shortage of storage can come in the form of open shelving, cupboards, or drawers. Think about whether you have a number of daily use or decorative items that would benefit from being on show, or whether you tend towards bottles of spare shampoo and packs of toilet rolls, which will be better stored out of sight. If your priority is a huge bath or large walk in shower, there’ll be less room for everything else. Perhaps, though, your preference is for an extra wide basin – or two separate large basins. Devoting a larger proportion of the room to your vanity unit will then make total sense and you will finish up with a room that you love.

Before you get started you will want to prep the bathroom. Protect the floor, counter top and tub with paper, plastic or drop cloths as this will get a little messy. Remove all bathroom accessories that you can. In our case we removed the old ceramic paper holder and towel bars. We decided to go with new chrome accessories. Depending on the height you want to install the beadboard you may also want to remove the mirrors, electrical plates and medicine cabinet. We also removed the toilet tank for an easier install around the plumbing pipes. Remove the baseboard and shoe molding if applicable. We installed new trim so we removed the door casing as well but you don’t have to if you want to re-use it.

I always like to start on the left side of the entrance door to the bathroom and I always end on the right side of the door this way your beadboard flows nicely around the entire room.

Measure and cut your base board first. Install the base board with 2″ trim nails. Try to nail about 1/2″ up from the bottom so that you are nailing into the bottom plate of the framed wall.

After you have installed the base board, cut your 7″ T&G beadboard to your desired height. Apply a generous amount of adhesive to the back and install it toung side out on the wall. Also, make sure the bottom is in the base board slot. Press it on firmly to make sure it adheres well to the wall. Nail the beadboard as recommended by the manufacturer. Cut you next piece, apply adhesive, place it on the wall and slide the groove over the toung. Repeat this process around the entire room until you end at the other side of the entrance door. After the beadboard is up, it is time to install the chair rail. Install the chair rail the same as you did the base but with the routed side down, slotted over the beadboard. After you have installed the chair rail, caulk all of your seams and joints. For a finer finish, fill the nail holes with painters putty. After your caulk and painters putty has dried, you will want to lightly sand your beadboard and trim.

I find it easier to paint the shoe mold before installing it this way you can paint your beadboard and base board on the wall. Paint as far down on the base as you can without getting it on the floor and then cut, install and caulk your shoe mold. Some people like to paint the trim before cutting and installing it, again this is personal preference. Paint touch up as necessary. Now stand back and enjoy your new beadboard! Don’t forget to clean up your mess.

I’ll admit, the color of this vanity leans more toward the middle, but I love the countertop so I’ve decided to include it.

I love the shape of the sinks and the fact that they sit atop the vanity. However I am not in love with the color of the counter. I know a dark countertop against the espresso may be too much – but the sand colored top clashes too much for my taste.
