Keeping things neat and organized is so important in a small room. Once you’ve taken care of some of the clutter, put the things you don’t use but can’t part with into storage. Next, clear off all of the horizontal surfaces in the room. Things should be looking more open already! Replace important items and then put out only a few light decorative items. If you have too much stuff still, consider installing floating shelves that will give you more surfaces without adding bulk.

Finally, scale your furniture to the size of the room. If you have a small room, don’t put fill it with big, bulky furniture. Smaller spaces, smaller furniture. Makes sense right? Sell a large couch or entertainment center in favor of something more delicate and streamlined. Also, if you pull your furniture away from the walls, it will give the room depth. I know, it may seem like you would maximize space by pushing everything against the wall, but it really works!

HARVEST GLASS BOWL WITH FLOWERS

To make a Thanksgiving centerpiece that includes all the symbols of fall, you will need the following:

- a small glass tumbler

- one very small pumpkin that has had the top cut off and the insides scooped out

- six or more small gourds

- a few dried leaves (preferably in various colors)

- a dozen or more fall flowers such as mums

- a cup of fresh or dried cranberries

- shallow glass bowl

After you have gathered your supplies, place the tumbler inside the pumpkin and fill it halfway with water.

Arrange the flowers in the tumbler and place the pumpkin in the glass bowl. Place the bowl containing the pumpkin and the flowers on a cutting board or large glass plate on the table. Arrange the leaves, gourds, and cranberries in a random fashion around the pumpkin. Add a few small candles if you wish. You will have a beautiful centerpiece in just a few minutes of your time.

Create another easy centerpiece with only a clear glass vase (any size you desire), two pounds of fresh or dried cranberries, and a large bunch of pink or white carnations. For the rest of the house I like to put Nutcracker Figurines around the living and dining rooms and accented with some Battery Operated Candles which seem to fit in most candle stick holders. I like these candles because to turn them on you just push down on the top rather than pick them up and turn the switch on the bottom and being LED they last a very long time. Also on the dining room table I like to put some Battery Operated Lights in and around the centerpiece. Now for the front door, I like to use a Battery Operated Wreath so I don’t have to worry about cords getting smashed in the door or cords moving where someone might trip over them. In the entry way I have found that a small grouping of a two, three and four foot Pre Lit Alpine Display Trees adds a wonderful touch.

Now on to the outside, where Christmas Lights seem to be the first thing to go up around the house and trees. You have to decide if you want to Save some Green in the long run by going with LED Lights and lower that December electric bill now or go with the traditional String Lights. In the theory of Feng Shui, it is said that in order to protect the entrance of your home, or to prevent negative external energy from entering your home – you should place a water feature close to the front door. It is believed that the person who is able to fold 1,000 (origami) cranes will be granted their greatest wish. Imagery of two cranes in the home of a newly married couple isn’t uncommon, place your paintings, sculptures, plaques, etc in rooms where you spend a lot of time with your mate as you will be always reminded of the loyalty in marriage.

4. The phoenix is a mythological sacred bird that symbolizes eternal life, beauty, fire and divinity. It is said that at the end of it’s life cycle, the phoenix builds a nest of cinnamon twigs. It ignites and burns – yet from the ashes rises a new phoenix in an egg of myrrh. It is also said that if a phoenix is wounded, it has the ability to self-regenerate – these things make the phoenix an eternal creature. In Asian tradition, the phoenix also represents the five human qualities; virtue, duty, humanity, reliability and proper behavior. The phoenix is a powerful symbol for strength and the ability to overcome.

5. The dragon, when alone is a symbol of male virility, the emperor, power and is generally regarded as a powerful creature. In Asian culture, the dragon is a benevolent figure – where as in European folklore, dragons are feared and often portrayed as ‘evil’. However when the dragon is coupled with the phoenix it takes on a whole new meaning. The dragon and phoenix paired together symbolize the perfect unity of male and female, or the yin and the yang. They are both powerful creatures that can withstand anything when put together, this represents a man and his wife overcoming all of life’s challenges when sticking together. It also symbolizes matriarchal and patriarchal good fortune, success in joint endeavors and blessed offspring. In Feng Shui, if you are a single man or woman looking to unite and find true love – symbols of the dragon and phoenix paired together should increase that vibrational energy of strong relationships in your home.

1. Go for dark woods: Even when a furniture piece isn’t specifically labeled or described as “Asian inspired”, a general rule of thumb for buying furniture to compliment the theme is to go with dark wood pieces. By dark I do not mean cherrywood or mahogany – but black or ebony colored woods. Now of course there are exceptions to every rule and there will be pieces that are very much orient inspired, but made from lighter materials. In those cases we will rely on other aspects of Asian culture to tie it all in.

2. Skip the brass hardware: Generally speaking, you won’t find a lot of silver or gold colored hardware on furniture inspired by Oriental influences, so to compliment your Asian inspired room – look for pieces with hardware (knobs and such) that are have a slightly tarnished or worn look – if any at all. The exception to this rule is a gold or silver piece that includes Asian imagery or symbolism such as a dragon, elephant or Chinese calligraphy script.

3. Don’t be afraid of red: We tend to avoid the color red in our decorating concepts, especially when it comes to larger pieces and choices in paint colors. Now again, speaking generally – that’s fine. You don’t want to go overboard with the color, particularly when employing Feng Shui concepts. However, red is a wonderful accent color to use in your design motif. In Chinese culture, red corresponds with the fire energy and symbolizes good fortune and joy. You will find the color displayed prominently during the Chinese New Year, family gatherings, and weddings as it symbolizes happiness. Adding a red console table or accent table to a room will invite the energy of happiness into your home.

4. Play on prints: There is certain images that have become a trademark so to speak of the Asian design style. I mentioned the use of Chinese calligraphy in tip #2, along with Japanese Kanji symbols – you’ll find these markings on a lot of contemporary furniture and wall decor. You may also want to consider accent tables with painted appliques of cherry blossoms, the dragon and phoenix, elephants or other traditional Asian settings.

There are other things that highlight the rich culture of the Far and middle east including the use of natural wood, specifically bamboo, clean lines, saddle style tables, and tables that sit low(er) to the ground than normal.

Asian inspired bedding is a catch-all phrase used to describe a wide variety of styles. Asian inspired bedding covers anything that uses traditional Asian motif, symbols, colors, scenery and other influences in it’s design. Easy Tips for Furniture Arranging

Are you a furniture re-arranger? That is someone who gets bored with the look of their home or rooms in their home and has to change things up every so often. Avoid boredom and poor room dynamics with these tips on how to arrange furniture in any room. You never knew it was this easy.

Tip #1 – Start big and work your way down.
When working with furniture, use the largest piece first. It could be the couch or it might be the entertainment center. Find a position that is both functional and practical within the room. For example, if you have a short wall in your living room, use something that will fit on that wall without overhang. The largest piece of furniture may have to sit opposite on the longer wall.

Tip#2 – Arrange furniture around a central object.
This could be a coffee table. Place it in the center of the room and position furniture so everyone could reach the table from their seat. Now, everyone can have a place for their drinks and a central place to hold a conversation or play a game. Be sure to leave at least five inches of space so you don’t hit the coffee table each time you sit or stand.

Tip#3 – Know which way your doors open.
There is nothing worse than having a door that can’t swing freely. Positioning furniture behind a door that opens in is waiting for an accident to happen. Either the hand of the person in the chair will get smashed or the door will get damaged from always hitting the furniture. Leave doorways free of furniture and open doorways free from furniture that overhangs into the space.

Tip#4 – Use all of the space in the room.
There is no hard and fast rule that says that couches and chairs need to be against a wall. In a large room, you will get an echo effect if you do that. For family, the seating is too far apart to hold a conversation without shouting. You can group furniture around a central point in your rooms. For example, if you have a fireplace, you can place two side chairs around it for cozy seating and arrange the couch and love seat around the television as another sitting area. Leaving space between walls and furniture makes small rooms appear large.

Six Decorating Mistakes Not to Make

Usually decorators or friends can tell you after the fact, what you did wrong. This article endeavors to stop you from ever taking that path in the first place.

1. Using too many accessories. It is a fact that you can knick knack yourself to death. Every blank space in your room doesn’t need a bobble head or a glass figurine. When you can’t think of what to fill an empty space with, place a chair or a floor vase there until you come up with something better. Refuse to use a stand loaded with collectibles. It’ll be harder to move than the vase when you do find an item for the spot.

2. Throw pillows all around. Pillows are fun, but can be annoying when you have to throw them in the floor to make room on the couch. Now, your room is completely thrown off by the sea of blue, red and green pillow icebergs all over the floor. That’s not attractive to guests. Use pillows sparingly and where the room calls for it. Couches are for sitting and talking or watching television. The occasional family member who wants to sleep can use the arm of the couch or bring their pillow out for a snooze.

3. Large furniture in the room. This is okay for a large room that needs to be divided up, but most people get larger furniture than they need. A living room set comes with a loveseat, sofa and probably a side chair. You don’t have to use all three pieces in your living room especially if it is too small for them. Measure the dimensions of the room (bedroom, bathroom, family room and living room) before purchasing furniture to be sure it will fit.

4. Heavy curtains to block the light. There are other methods for blocking out sunlight besides heavy, dark curtains. During the day, they are not so bad but in the evening when the sun goes down, the room gets dark and small. Instead, use shades that filter light but also help to illuminate the room and provide privacy in the evening hours.

5. Eye level wall hangings. It seems like it makes sense to hang pictures and mirrors at eye level. The only problem with this is they are too close to the back of the head when you sit on the couch. In the hallway, shoulders can bump them because they are so low. Hanging items on your wall that are above your head, gives the room the illusion of height. They are also out of the way of little hands and not-so little elbows and shoulders.

6. The wrong paint color. Avoid darker paint hues for a small room. Your space feels even more cramped when you paint with dark colors. On the opposite side of the coin, keep in mind, large rooms can seem like a cavern with light colors on the walls. Choose a color that brings about the desired effect for your room. Painting with seasonal colors will see you repainting in no time. Accessorize for a seasonal feel but skip painting for it.

Avoiding mistakes is better than making them in the first place as far as decorating is concerned. If any of these ideas have been on your mind, banish them right away in favor of better suggestions.

One of my favorite storage methods are actually baskets! Have you ever been caught in a situation where you have company coming over and there are toys and random items tossed on the floor in every room? Well I utilize the “Basket System” for moments like this, I strategically place baskets throughout my home, and in moments of mayhem – I gather my children and we do one clean sweep throughout the house, tossing all the items on the floor into the baskets. That typically takes under 10 minutes to complete. After all the items are in the baskets, we take the baskets one at a time – and empty them, placing all the items in their proper places.

I like using this method because even if I do not complete the last step of emptying the baskets right away, at the very least – all of the items are picked up off the floor. I can move the baskets to closets, the laundry room, or mud room and resume emptying them after my guests have gone home for the day.

French doors are characterized by the incorporation of glass panels in a frame. Typical French door frames are made of some type of wood, though other materials can also be used.
