Splash of Color: Blue Bedroom Ideas

Blue is a popular decorating color, because there are numerous hues and shades for you to choose from. From turquoise to dark indigo, the shades of blue that you can use in your bedroom really run the gamut. For the 2011 season, color palettes of blue and neutral tones are quite popular, as blue shades mixed with hues of orange. Orange and blue especially complement modern décor well. Chocolate brown and shades of light blue are a perennial favorite amongst interior decorators.

Shades of blue are traditionally incorporated into French Country influenced designs; however, if you would like to update this traditional decorating scheme, consider looking for a high gloss, electric blue color for the walls of your bedroom. Soft cream bedding and window treatments can downplay the impact of this vibrant hue. To keep the effect of the bedroom from becoming overwhelming, look for modern furniture with clean, simple lines. Electric blue is a strong color, and it will not be for everyone, so make sure you are willing to commit to the look.

If you prefer a more muted color palette, try painting the walls of your bedroom a deep, inky blue color. A white ceiling, crown molding, and white bedding can create a strong contrasting finish. To keep this bold wall color from becoming overwhelming, look for table lamps and other accessories that are fashioned from bronze, polished brass, or other natural metals. Abstract paintings can further enhance the appearance of the space.

Hues of blue can be used to create a monochromatic color scheme within your bedroom. When rich and deep hues of blue are used, it creates an elegant and sophisticated color palette that speaks of modernity. The key to successfully pulling off this look is look for bedding, window treatments, rugs, and throw pillow that feature different, subtle textures. Ideally, you should choose a neutral shade of earth tones for the walls to keep the color from becoming too overwhelming. Even though blue is considered a cool color, the different textures of the fabric contribute to warm up the appearance of your bedroom.

Finally, regardless of the hues of blue that you choose to use in your bedroom, you should use warm cream tones and different shades of blue to maintain balance within the space. The undertones of the different shades of blue that you use will contribute to the overall ambiance of your bedroom. For example, green and yellow undertones in blue shades create a warm and inviting environment. Keep the influence of the undertones in mind when you are choosing what shades of blue to use.
